Why Support APACVS

The Association of Physician Assistants in Cardiovascular Surgery (APACVS) extends to industry the opportunity to provide funding in support of programs and services that will help APACVS achieve its mission to develop and educate PAs in cardiovascular and thoracic surgical specialties, to support the betterment of public health, and to sustain an increase in the overall growth of the CVT PA profession.

Supporting the APACVS gives your organization access to hundreds of clinicians who perform a vital and dynamic role in cardiac and thoracic surgery and critical care. PAs specializing in these areas continue to expand their clinical scope of practice and importance to hospitals, hospital systems and surgical practices. By supporting the APACVS, you are placing your organization in front of these bedside clinicians who have influence over day-to-day clinical and purchasing decisions. In addition to having influence within their teams, PAs are increasingly taking on healthcare leadership roles and their opinions are frequently sought for their expertise in the specialty.

Where does a PA in cardiac and thoracic surgery practice?

PAs practice in operative suites, critical care units, step down units, patient floors, and out-patient clinics. They answer consults to the surgical service and respond to urgent calls for assistance for patients in the Emergency Department.

PAs have traditionally functioned as assistant surgeons in the operative suite where they first and second assist during operations. While vein harvesting has always been part of their scope of practice, it has become increasingly important in the era of endoscopic vein harvesting. Additionally, techniques and technology in Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) are advancing and requiring skilled PAs to assist in these operations.

With critical care medicine so closely tied to cardiac and thoracic surgery, PAs are called on to take on the intensivist role which requires involvement with frequent medication prescribing as well as critical care procedures.
